The Perspective, the Motivation

Biography

Patrick Jones is an artist
living and working in West Cork,
having moved here from the UK in 2022.
The roots
of the way he expresses himself, however,
began several decades earlier...
He has been fascinated
with the deeper side of life
from an early age — form and flora,
people and places, wildlife and the sea,
and the quieter pull
of decay and disintegration
that runs alongside all that beauty.
At 18,
disillusioned with the world around him,
he began studying with Jehovah's Witnesses —
a turning point that helped him
become a more positive person,
and one that has stayed with him ever since.
Art has remained a continuing part of his life,
although his principal working life
has been outside the professional art world.
In the late 1990s, he was busy painting murals,
then his focus started to shift toward canvas work,
mainly on a commission basis.
He explored digital work for a time,
but settled mainly on framed original,
mixed media pieces on paper,
made using acrylic, oil pastel
and soft coloured pencil.
His current work explores landscape,
wildlife, atmosphere and the passing of time.
He is interested in the beauty of
ordinary places and in the fact
that those places are never entirely fixed:
landscapes change and familiar scenes
gradually become part of the past.
Patrick develops paintings
from photographs and observations
of particular townlands and landmarks
in West Cork.
As an independent artist, he is now
bringing together this history of making art
with a growing body of contemporary work
inspired by his adopted home.
If you bump into him, you'll likely find him
deep in conversation with interesting people,
taking in the sea air of West Cork, or
taking photos for the next piece.

Artist's Statement

I have been making art for much of my life.
After studying Art and Art History
in Essex in the early 1990s,
I spent a number of years painting murals
and working on commissioned paintings,
while developing my own practice alongside
my working life.
Since moving to West Cork, Ireland,
in 2022, the landscape around me
has become an increasingly
important source of inspiration.
I am drawn to ordinary, familiar places —
fields, roads, coastlines, hedgerows,
wildlife and the people who inhabit them.
Often it is something easily overlooked
that catches my attention: a particular
arrangement of colour, a group of animals,
the shape of a landscape or
the atmosphere of a moment.
My work is concerned with atmosphere, place
and the passage of time;
landscapes are continually changing,
sometimes gradually and sometimes
dramatically.
A painting can therefore become
more than a depiction of a place;
it can preserve a particular moment in its life.
I am not looking
to make grand statements about these changes.
I am interested in simply noticing them —
appreciating what is here, accepting that
it will change, and recording something
of the experience before it passes.
I work primarily
with acrylic and mixed media,
allowing colour, texture and mark-making
to develop alongside the subject
and my response to it.

Giclée

The term Giclée is French and means to spray.
When used in printing terms it is usually referring to how a large format
inkjet printer produces its work. Small spraying devices that can both
match colour and apply ink precisely, give artists a high-quality print
of their digital artwork.
-The prints of Patrick William Jones are rendered onto Hahnemühle 308 gsm rag Paper.
This paper is a smooth surface matte photographic paper with a high white point
and exceptional colour delivery.
-Each print is signed and issued with its limited number, usually 1/25 by the Artist.
Patrick William Jones’ Fine art Giclée Prints
are printed with archival pigment inks leaving enough border space
